Between Dreams and Reality, A Tale of Love and Longing
Written by Ara (Kru’23)
What’s once I felt my me time the most is watching my favorite film. Movies grow with us, deepening as we change. Sabrina (1954) was one of the classics that I watched lately to stole my heart — its delicate charm swept me away, its elegance felt effortless. It was a world of longing and grace, a love story that once felt larger than life. Or maybe this was all my exaggeration; I really find it perfect how Audrey plays her character! And the fashion! The stunning costumes designed by Givenchy elevate the film to another level, showcasing timeless elegance and style that still inspires the world until today.
Perhaps if this were a contemporary film, I would grow weary of its cheesiness and predictability, rolling my eyes at familiar tropes. Yet, it is the enchantment threaded through every scene that holds me captive, a charm that transcends the clichés and breathes life into the narrative. The effortless grace of the storytelling and the magnetic allure of its characters invite me to revel in its whimsy, allowing me to overlook the very elements that might otherwise dull my interest.
“The moon’s reaching for me,” Sabrina says, her words wrapping around me like a soft embrace. There’s a poetic quality to her musings that I find utterly enchanting. In a world that has kept us too busy, chasing the future and navigating the currents of life, she reminds me that there will always be something to look forward to — love captured in moments like this.
Yet, even amidst the charm, I can’t help but grapple with the glaring age gap that feels almost absurd. How can the daughter of a chauffeur possess such extraordinary beauty? It seems almost too fantastical, yet Wilder captures it with a grace that softens the edges of disbelief. He paints a world where even the improbable feels possible, allowing me to get lost in the dream of it all. In the end, I find myself torn between the allure of her poetic reflections and the dissonance of the story’s premise, marveling at how love can still be beautiful, even when it dances on the edge of reality.
Ultimately, Sabrina remains a story to the power of love and longing, a film that invites us to dream even when reality seems harsh. Through its enchanting moments and whimsical charm, it reveals that beauty can be found in the most unexpected places. While I wrestle with the implausibilities of its narrative, I can’t deny the magic it holds — how it beckons us to believe in the extraordinary scene as the story is, reminding us to cherish those fleeting moments of connection that make life truly remarkable.
