Deadpool & Wolverine: Chaos & Madness
Written by Farrel Zaki (Kru’23)
Remember when the MCU was straightforward and didn’t require a PhD in multiverse-physics-theory-thingy? Yeah, me too. I know the MCU is in shambles right now. It’s all about the variants, alternative timelines, the theories that in the next MCU movies there will be 13 million overbudget cameos. Well, guess what? Deadpool & Wolverine is THE ULTIMATE multiverse flick. Characters pop in and out from different timelines, and the stakes that used to feel so high now seem almost meaningless because, hey, there’s always another universe where things are fine, right?
The multiverse might be the MCU’s downfall, but when I went to watch this, I felt a spark I haven’t felt since the MCU’s glory days. Sure, it doesn’t magically fix everything, but it’s like a refreshing gulp of air. And the best part? This chaotic, troubled movie is just fun. It’s fun and fun and fun because it’s just fun. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and neither should you. So while the MCU isn’t completely back to its former glory, this film is a step in the right direction. It’s a hilarious, action-packed, and much-needed reminder that Marvel can still surprise us and ALSO COULD PROBABLY REDEEM THEMSELVES FOR THE NEXT 20 F****** MOVIES (pls feige)
Here’s the scoop: this is the MCU’s first R-rated film, and it goes all out. The movie dives into its R rating with both feet, serving up a hefty dose of blood, guts, and dark humor. We’re talking limbs flying everywhere, heads rolling, and enough gore to make you question if they needed a bigger budget for fake blood. Deadpool’s jokes are as sharp as his katanas, and he’s not afraid to drop a FEW F-bombs during the 2 hours runtime. Imagine him quipping, “Hey, Wolverine, how about you shove that snikt up your — ” as they go tearing each other down. This is just a ridiculously fun superhero romp that shows just how well Deadpool and Wolverine mix when they’re allowed to cut loose and let their BRIGHT sides shine.
The chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in this movie is nothing short of legendary. Fans have been dreaming about this duo for what feels like forever, and it’s finally here to deliver the goods. Reynolds’ Deadpool, with his quick wit and no-holds-barred humor, plays off Jackman’s gruff, serious Wolverine in a way that’s both hilarious and unexpectedly heartwarming. They don’t just swap insults — they’re practically in a battle to see who can out-swear the other while slicing through bad guys.
As for Jackman’s Wolverine, this isn’t the same Logan from the last two decades. This Wolverine comes from a different universe, carrying his own dramatic backstory and unique struggles. Despite the new universe, he doesn’t shy away from the trademark heroism that has defined the character for so long. Even though this Wolverine technically isn’t the same one we’ve followed since the first X-Men, Jackman still embodies the essence of what makes Wolverine great. He brings a depth of emotion and a fierce sense of heroism, blending nostalgia with a fresh, playful twist.
And let’s not forget the multiverse shenanigans! By throwing in some variants and familiar faces, this flick plays with the multiverse concept in a way that’s both chaotic and brilliant. This opens the door for surprising cameos and boatloads of nostalgia, making every scene a treasure hunt for us nerds. It’s like Marvel tossed all the toys out of the box and told Deadpool and Wolverine to go nuts. The mix of old and new characters popping up keeps things unpredictable and ridiculously fun. I’m telling you, this is the real multiverse of madness and fun! Doctor Strange and Spider-Man ain’t got nothin’ on this wild ride!
The film really nails the whole fourth wall thing, and it’s a total riot. Deadpool’s commentary on the MCU’s history and his own crazy journey through Marvel feels like he’s giving us a VIP pass to the wildest show ever. It’s as if he’s right next to you, tossing out jokes about the Marvel timeline while flipping through a scrapbook of past blunders and wins. This self-aware humor not only delivers big laughs but makes the entire MCU saga feel more relatable. Deadpool’s basically shouting, “Yeah, we know it’s a hot mess, but isn’t it f****** awesome?” It’s like he’s giving us a cheeky wink from the screen, reminding us that even with all the chaos, the ride’s totally worth it.
While the film is hilarious, it’s not perfect. The plot is as predictable as a cheesy rom-com, and the exposition can really slow things down. It’s like they crammed in so many jokes and gory bits that they forgot to tighten up the story. This is a classic Marvel issue lately, where the plot takes a backseat to all the flashy stuff. Sure, we love the laughs, the chaos, and seeing our favorite characters do their thing, but come on, a bit more focus wouldn’t hurt! Sometimes it feels like they’re just throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, and while a lot of it does, a more coherent story would really make it better.
Then there’s Cassandra Nova. Talk about underwhelming. She’s got these insane powers, and yet she ends up being just another generic bald baddie with zero depth. It’s a classic superhero film pitfall — great heroes, lame villains. To be fair, Nova has her moments where she seems like she might be fairly developed, but just as she’s getting a bit of substance, the movie decides to go full throttle into chaos again. After 500 words of swearing and mayhem, the bad guy is defeated? Really? It’s like they thought, “Hey, let’s toss in a crazy villain,” without actually giving her the character development she deserved. It’s a missed opportunity that makes the movie’s climax feel a bit flat despite all the wild fun.
This movie is also a big shout-out to the Fox X-Men films. It’s like Deadpool’s giving a friendly nod to the old days, tipping his hat to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and the X-Men crew that came before. It’s not just about looking back; it’s Deadpool’s way of saying, “We appreciate those old X-Men movies, and we’re not forgetting them!” He’s acknowledging the past while making it clear that he’s ready to shake things up in the MCU. It’s a great mix of honoring the old while paving the way for some fresh Marvel adventures! (its kinda sad)
In the grand, chaotic tapestry of the MCU’s current multiverse mayhem, Deadpool & Wolverine emerges as a thrilling breath of fresh air, embracing the absurdity of its R-rated madness with unapologetic flair. The film masterfully blends humor, high-octane action, and nostalgic nods, delivering a joyous escapade that reminds us of the MCU’s earlier glory while paving the way for its future. Though it stumbles with a predictable plot and underwhelming villain, it’s a raucous celebration of Marvel’s legacy and potential. So, if you’re ready for a wild ride through alternate universes with a side of sharp wit and gratuitous gore, grab your popcorn and enjoy — because Deadpool would probably say, “It’s a hot mess, but damn, isn’t it a blast?!”
