Review: My Ahjussi (2018)

It’s not easy to summarize this drama in order for you to get a sense of the show’s tone, but if I have to put it in a few words

My Ahjussi (atau My Mister) nyeritain tentang Park Dong Hoon (Lee Sun Gyun), mid-40s, seorang manajer di perusahaan konstruksi, dan Lee Ji An (IU), mid-20s, seorang karyawan kontrak di satu perusahaan yang sama dengan Dong Hoon, serta orang-orang terdekat di sekitarnya yang berusaha hidup stabil financially & emotionally dengan caranya masing-masing. Konflik ceritanya berpusat pada kehidupan Dong Hoon dan Ji An yang sama-sama punya pressure sebagai tulang punggung keluarga, meskipun dari background status ekonomi yang berbeda.

As a whole, drama ini sangat well crafted. Great story, strong characters (terutama IU), yet so real. My Ahjussi tells us much about the basic fundamental emotions of all human beings, such as humanity, kindness, and selfless love. There is a constant search for peace with the world and with oneself, dan drama ini berhasil nunjukin men can be sensitive and vulnerable too dalam proses tersebut. “It’s okay to fail.”, “It’s nothing, really.”, “You can still be happy.”

Drama ini juga mengeksplor kompleksnya human relationships with one another. Dong Hoon dan Ji An sebenarnya tidak punya alasan apapun untuk saling berkaitan, tapi penulisnya punya cara sendiri untuk menunjukkan how the most random person in the room can be the one who you shared your pain with. Fun fact (sekaligus bentuk validasi), Paulo Coelho, penulis “The Alchemist, pernah memuji drama ini atas pencapaian screenplay, directing, dan performance cast-nya yang luar biasa. Di akun twitter pribadinya Paulo bilang, “..it is a flawless description of the human condition”.

Dan ngomongin pencapaian, My Ahjussi mendapatkan penghargaan Best Drama dan Best Script di 55th Baeksang Arts Awards, salah satu penghargaan bergengsi untuk industri perfilman dan pertelevisian di Korea Selatan. Sayangnya, dibalik pencapaiannya, drama ini bukan termasuk drama mainstream yang sering diperbincangkan netizen, mungkin karena formulanya yang murni menceritakan tentang realita kehidupan yang lumrah terjadi pada keseharian. I would suggest the readers that it’s best to dive into it with no expectations. Believe me, it’ll surprise you with the profound depths of its writing and get you hooked up in the first two episodes. Kalo ditanya genrenya apa, mungkin bisa dibilang ini genrenya “healing”.

I’m not sure how to describe the feeling you’re left with, but you’ll heal with him, you’ll heal with Dong Hoon.
