Review: The Danish Girl (2015)

“How have I ever deserved such love” — Lili Elbe

Another love story that came from an artist couple in early 1900s Denmark. I couldn’t put this story through words. It’s such a pure and unconditional type of love. A Brief plot, well I’m going to put all of the movie hereafter so if you don’t want spoilers, better stop reading. Gerda and Einar are a married couple, one day Gerda asks him to be his model by wearing stockings and a pair of heels. Unfortunately, this moment awakes something deeply inside Einar, someone called Lili. Since then, Einar begins to change, slowly gone, and being replaced by Lili. I love how every actor plays their role. I can feel Greda’s broken heart by seeing Alicia Vikander tears fall of her eyes just like that. Einar’s curiosity grows every single day, and this helps him to find him, or rather, herself. He watches how women behave, learn and copy them and slowly became one of them. At one point, Gerda doesn’t excite him anymore. Yet deeply he knows his love for her doesn’t diminish in the slightest. He’s becoming Lili more and more every single day. He wears a night dress and says, “Because when I dream, its Lili’s dreams”. Greda’s love for him/her is, remarkable. A man caught her attention, yet she said, “I’m still Einar’s wife”. Their love for each other amazes me. Even though this huge wall came across them, and it’s definitely nobody’s fault. This “wall” hasn’t become a reason for them to stop loving each other. I also admire the cinematography; it helps the movie feel alive and real. Soft music and the lighting, I’m in love with everything about this movie. In the end, Lili got a surgery and lost a lot of blood. She must go, as a happy, fully woman. “How have I ever deserved such love” she said, and I fell once again for this movie. Tom Hooper, you really got me this time.
